Escanaba & Lake Superior

The E & LS main lines run from:

Wells line: Wells (Escanaba)-Channing
Republic line: Channing-Republic
Green Bay line: Channing-Green Bay
O & B line: Channing-Ontonogan

branch lines run from:

M & M line: Crivitz-Marinette
Oconto Falls line: Stiles-Oconto Falls
Escanaba branch: N. Escanaba-Escanaba
Nestoria line: Sidnaw-Nestoria

The E & LS and WC share ownership of the Menominee branch and yard/terminal trackage, in Menominee. The E & LS has trackage rights and switching rights over the WC's Marinette branch as well.

The E & LS has bases their Green Bay operations out of WC's N. Green Bay yard, so has rights into that yard. They have trackage rights over the WC Marinette sub from: N. Green Bay-Howard, Marinette-Menominee, and Powers-N. Escanaba. They have trackage rights over the WC Bradley sub from Pembine-Hermansville, and the WC Iron Mountain sub from Hermansville-Powers.

These rights allow them to access N. Green Bay yard; access the jointly owned yard & terminal trackage in Menominee; and run trains over the WC from Pembine-Escababa. (The Wells line is impassable in the middle, so these rights are necessary to access Escanaba area trackage.)

The WC has tracjage rights over the E & LS as well, although they are unused. This is about 1.5 miles in Iron Mountain from the interchange with the WC Iron Mountain sub on the east side of town to the isolated WC Antoine yard lead on the west side of town. Antoine yard is not used.

E & LS yards are located at: Wells, N. Escanaba, Channing, Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Pembine, Crivitz, Marinette, Menominee, and Ontonogan.

The shops in Wells are over 90 years old, and probably the last roundhouse in the U.P. The cars shops, on the north side of the building, are used only for storage now, but the steam-era roundhouse to the south side is still in use.

There is a modern paint-shop at Wells, and a large, modern, car repair shop in Escanaba at the old P & H plant. Smaller enginehouses are located at Channing & Menominee.

What's New?

Monday 9/5:

Here's a report from last week:

Monday night I walked in to the Menominee River bridge from the Kingsford side about 6PM, and caught the northbound Crivitz-Channing local with GP38 #400 for power.

They stopped at the north end of Kingsford yard to pick-up 2 empty pulpwood flats (ELS) from the WC on the siding, so I was able to get ahead of them for another picture ducking under U.S.2/U.S.141. It's nice how streets parallel the tracks so nice through town. I tried for another picture at the ex-CNW overpass on the west side of Iron Mt., but the trees are getting real thick there so obscure the E & LS engine.

Tuesday morning the southbound Channing-Crivitz local was tied-up at the south end of Kingsford yard. SD40-2 #500 & F7 #600 were leading. The northbound was back through town about 10PM.

Wednesday morning SD40-2 #501 was the sole power on the southbound, tied-up at Kingsford. Several pulpwood loads and boxcars were following. It looked like they set-out 1 loaded ELS pulpwood flat at the south-end of Kingsford yard for the WC to pick-up as well.

Thursday night, SD40-2 #501 was leading the northbound. They were tied-up at the north-end of Kingsford yard about 8PM, and the train was still there awaiting a dog-catch crew about 10PM.

I also noticed of note there are several detrucked boxcars at the scrap-yard on the south-side of Kingsford. I noticed a couple GB & W cars, as well as 1 Erie-Lackawanna.
